Our business is done.

Wenger:

on whether more players will go than arrive by deadline day…
Both can happen. It depends how many players will go to see if we can bring one more in. We are on alert in the last seven days. Everybody gets agitated and phones ring more often than before. Sometimes you have to share the work in the final day because you have some cases going out and some coming in. The last two days are always very hectic.

…

on how happy he is with the strength of the squad…
I’m happy with the strength of the squad. I’m completely happy with the strength of the squad. I have said many times that we have too many players in our squad, and some of them have no chance to compete for places because we have too many. Too much competition for places is no good as well because the players have no chance of playing. On the other hand, one of the values of this club is to give a chance to young players who deserve it. If you have too many players of confirmed status, you’re in a difficult position to give a chance to young players. We have the luck of having three or four players who are top quality and deserve a chance.

It seems like we could very well be done with transfer business as long as we don’t sell anyone. Our squad is still too big for us to add anyone new.

So let’s sell Mustafi and keep Debuchy and Gibbs :hipster:

Lovely vibes coming out of that press conference

That is something I have never heard a manager say before.

If it’s true, then why did he get himself into this position?

You honestly haven’t heard about the concept behind too much competition for places? Are you bloody sure?

Shit man, even FIFA teaches you that.

If that’s true, why has Wenger got himself in this situation and then moan about it at the end of the transfer window.
Why not sort it out at the start of it?

He is the manager and is in charge of almost every aspect of the footballing side of the club, so who’s to blame?

Wenger does a damage he doesn’t know how to fix after.

im not sure hes moaning about anything, and he isn’t in a bad situation until the transfer window actually closes.

That obscure, repressed and forlorn hope I had about Wenger/the board/whoever changing their approach and growing some testicular fortitude this summer has been finally crushed now.

Our conduct this summer has not been befitting of a club that wants to do what it can to get back in the CL, to try and go for the title. If Alexis and Özil go next summer, we will have truly become a Europa League standard club.

Instead of stopping the rot, taking stock of the direction the club is inevitably headed towards and doing everything to turn it around, we’ve just carried on with the same tactics as before. Wait for a cheap superstar to become available, being happy with what we have.

I’ve had a couple of doubles on an empty stomach but can’t help feeling like this is truly the beginning of a cycle of decline.

I agree with you, however, the decline has been in effect for over a decade.

The rot and malaise shows no signs and stopping and when we lose at least one of either Ozil and Sanchez the damage may very well become irreparable for the foreseeable future.

Wenger isn’t righting any wrongs by staying on longer he’s just dragging us down further and leaving a major cluster fuck for whoever the board appoints to replace him.

The whole “squad is too big to add players” line is complete horseshit for so many reasons.

First, in the end, who fucking cares if players like Debuchy, Campbell, Gibbs, and Lucas are in the squad or not? They aren’t part of the matchday plans either way. The important thing is to add talent and quality. The idea that we can’t buy a player until we sell the likes of Debuchy and Campbell is so completely nonsensical that it defies belief. Are there not enough lockers in the boot room?

Second, why haven’t the players been moved on already? Wenger frames this like its some ultra difficult problem with no easy solution. But in reality its because we’ve been haggling over peanuts on the price with all the potential buyers. Basically, the logic is essentially “Unfortunately, we can’t bring in any players that would really improve the team because we’re still 2m euros apart from Galatasary and Deportivo on the valuation of Gibbs and Lucas.” Honestly, its fucking insulting to the supporters to feed us this kind of bullshit.

Honestly. For a club which has a €400 milion revenue. It’s laughable.

Why? How much do they spend on other stuff?

and that is EXACTLY why other clubs don’t like dealing with us whether it is buying or selling. Apparently someone said (cant remember who but someone close to the club) that apparently when clubs hear Arsenal wants one of their players the selling club automatically cringe at the thought because we are so fucking awkward to deal with and they hate going through all of the shit of tooing and throwing and general fucking about. Some clubs almost pretty much hear we are interested and without even doing anything they are like ‘yeah whatever fuck off!’ We apparently have damaged our relationships with quite a few clubs and agents because of general fucking about.

€2 million is really going to have an actual influence on the operations of this football club, and is not more like a drop in the ocean, that we have to hold out for it?
