U.S. Politics

Nice analysis there, really accurate :stuck_out_tongue:

My regret is not putting more money on Trump at 5.5 than the 20 quid I did.

It hasn’t consoled me at all.

He gave public the underdog feeling, i guess.
Democrats had a big budget on advertising which was focused on berating him.
Media & Celebrities were making fun of him, left & right.

People tend to go for the victim.

I guess because they are more scared of immigration than losing their Obamacare.

Saying fair play to Trump on winning the 2016 presidential race is not some kind of positive endorsement of his character, policies or even the campaign he ran.

I was merely looking objectively at the wider context the election with the candidates and realizing Trump has beaten a opponent who is far more established in US politics and whose campaign was better funded. The media narrative and odds were way against him but he still managed to win - these are objective facts so fair play

Trump won because he went against everything the established parties stand for. He stood up against the DNC, the major players of the GOP, the major players in the media. He won because people are genuinely disillusioned with how things are going right now and the scary rise of the far right is indicative of that.

I was going to make some kind of quip. Then reality struck and it doesn’t seem funny in the slightest. This is a sea change. I despair. I mean, there are idiots everywhere but how the fuck does a supposed developed nation vote one in as their leader? I really don’t get it. OK, he’s charismatic if you’re into that type of thing but not remotely likeable on any level. A hideous human being. Yet people voted for him. One day they’ll start to hear their conscience screaming out over the incessant, inane whooping. America should be ashamed of themselves.

The only amazing thing about that, is that he sent a telegram.
Haven’t Russia been connected to the internet yet?

A clear failure by centrist politics. One thing I noticed on Bernie Sanders FB feed is just how many of his supporters refused to vote for Hilary, a good 3 out of every 5 posts I read. You’re not going to win if you cannot even command your own base. On the bright side, despite Trump being an obvious racist twat, I strangely don’t see his victory as significantly worse than a Hilary one, except perhaps on the issues of free health care, and the environment. In general terms I don’t see how he could be any worse than say a Theresa May here in the UK, and no one is having a panic attack about her. In fact there isn’t all that much difference between Trump and the direction of travel we’re seeing here in the UK under May.

The election was rigged!

But really, nothing has changed yet.

He was already a different person in his victory speech to what we’ve seen this past year. No aggression, little arrogance. He ran a loudmouth campaign like it was reality TV but that’s over now so he will be less of a cunt.

In reality he’ll probably change very little in 4 years, but if he does make some of the changes he says like support for veterans then it might not be all bad. He’ll do what all politicians do which is come up with a plan to favour some things and harm other things which is just the nature of limited resources.

They were both shit candidates, so either winning was shit. It became personal and on a personal level Trump will appeal to more people. 8 years ago the cult of Obama was strong, but I don’t really get much sense of a cult of Hilary.

Also in a 2 party system, 2 terms is often enough to piss enough people off to fancy a change so she was up against it if she’s perceived as the “more of the same” candidate.

I heard a journalist from Washington Post (on radio 4 I think) saying that this is basically the end of the West as we know it today. NATO, European Security (potentially global security), and a rules based international system are all under real threat.

Still early to see if Trump will indeed still back NATO and tone down rhetoric on existing trade deals, but it’s clear that things will change in the west now.

Its a bit like making a choice of baby sitters the McCanns or Jimmy Saville ,which one do u choose !

On seriousness I am a shankly socialist so I should be upset but Im not !

Trump may be outrageous but he isnt a Washington insider , he might just change things , and if he doesnt he’s no worse than Obama who did nothing for 8 years except cause misery and death to the people of Libya ,Egypt,Syria and Kurdish Iraq !

I hope you feel dirty now. Like, covered in oil dirty.

Him being a racist twat is exactly why this is so bad. Racists and sexist people now see their backwards ideas being justified. This is incredibly bad for us as a society.

A little bit, but not really lol. It’s not like I was sat there with fingers crossed ready to count my money lol. I just habitually bet on things I don’t want to happen.

I absolutely would have preferred not to have won the bet.
